Injectors work to very fine tolerances, spraying fuel in a precise pattern at high pressure. Deposits build up on the nozzle over time from fuel quality, short trips and normal combustion, and even a small amount distorts that spray. The symptoms come on gradually: rougher idle, hesitation under load, more smoke on a diesel, worse fuel consumption and higher emissions, usually well before any warning light appears.

A cleaner run through the tank every few services keeps deposits from establishing in the first place, which is far cheaper than injector removal and testing. Add the treatment before filling up so it mixes properly with the fuel.
