Choose the disc for the material. Steel and stainless discs are formulated differently, and stainless work needs a low-contaminant disc free of iron, sulphur and chlorine, otherwise the work rusts or the weld is compromised. A grinding disc is thicker than a cutting disc and is designed to work on its face at an angle to the workpiece, typically around 30 degrees.

Safety is not negotiable here. Never exceed the maximum RPM printed on the disc, always fit the guard, inspect discs for cracks before mounting, run a new disc up to speed clear of the work, and never use a cutting disc for grinding or a grinding disc for cutting.
