Both fluids are quietly critical and both get neglected. Coolant does more than stop freezing and boiling: its inhibitor package protects aluminium heads, cast iron blocks and radiator solder from corrosion, and topping up with plain water dilutes that protection until the cooling system starts eating itself.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which drops its boiling point. Under sustained or hard braking that moisture can vaporise in the caliper, the pedal goes long and soft and braking effort falls away. That is why a two-yearly fluid change is specified regardless of mileage.

Always use the coolant type and DOT specification stated for the vehicle, and never mix technologies.
