Heavy-duty hand cleaners combine solvent or citrus action to dissolve oily soil with, in gritted versions, a mild abrasive that lifts ingrained dirt out of skin creases. Non-gritted products are gentler for frequent use through the day, while gritted formulations suit end-of-shift cleaning after heavy work. Products containing skin conditioners help offset the drying effect of washing many times a day, which is a genuine problem for technicians.

Bulk 5L and 20L containers with a pump dispenser work out far cheaper than retail packs in a busy workshop. Never clean hands with petrol, thinners or brake cleaner, which strip skin oils and are absorbed through the skin.
