Sizing a hose clamp
Measure the outside diameter of the hose once it sits on the fitting, then pick a clamp whose range puts that size near the middle. A clamp wound out to its limit grips unevenly, and one wound right down can bite into the hose. Also suits other hoses of 13 to 19 mm outside diameter, such as small coolant and vacuum hoses.
Fitting tips
- Fit the clamp just behind the barb or bead so it cannot slide off.
- Tighten firmly, but stop before the band cuts into the rubber.
- Check the clamps again after the first few heat cycles, because hoses take a set.
